Oncos Therapeutics is developing new cancer therapies based on next-generation oncolytic viruses which target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal healthy cells unharmed. These genetically engineered viruses combat cancer through a unique double whammy, since they also induce immune responses against tumours. "This is an extremely promising strategy. Cancer treatment is today still based on surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy - methods that are 50 to 100 years old," says Lifeline Ventures partner Timo Ahopelto.
Oncos has a unique platform for a data-driven clinical development program. More than 200 patients have been treated through Oncos's Advanced Therapy Access Program since 2007, increasing experts' understanding of how viruses can best cure different cancer patients. The results have been very promising.
"Thanks to the first international venture capital round conducted by a Finnish biotech company in more than a decade, Oncos can now run a high-quality clinical program as the first step to turn these viruses into medicine," says Ahopelto. The company recently announced the addition to its board of two world-renowned health specialists with expertise in personalised medicine and biotech.
